Why this petition matters

Started by Sean Smyth

We are the only region of the UK, not to provide Age appropriate care for Teenagers and Young Adults (TYA) with life threatening illness such as blood cancer. We can find no reason why TYA Blood cancer patients have to be treated in the adult Haematology department or why they have to be treated in adults only environment. Our health system is letting our children down. Why are the parents of TYA, sleeping on hospital floors beside their child’s bed, why is there no proper facilities for families when their child is in hospital, for weeks or even months. Yet our executive and assembly can find millions of pounds to giveaway to private membership golf clubs and other private for profit sports organisations such as the Belfast City Marathon. Our experience and that of many other parents is that the end of life care for our children was appalling. We know of 5 teenagers and young adults who have died since Eimear, their families will tell you the same. Our children were not given the respect and dignity they should have been given. Robbed of the health by cancer, and of their modesty, dignity, by not having age appropriate care. There is medical evidence which proves that treating TYA in an none age appropriate environment is detrimental to their recovery when compared with those treated in an age appropriate environment with age appropriate facilities for patients and their families. We are asking you to sign our petition calling for age appropriate health care for Teenagers and Young Adults in Northern Ireland and for a single Northern Ireland agency to promote Blood, Organ, and Stem Cell Donor awareness here.
