Why this petition matters

Started by Edward Aroyan

Dear Governor Ron DeSantis:

Please help us stop the dumping of polluted waters of Lake Okeechobee into the Gulf of Mexico!  It has led to the death of thousands of dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, pelicans and other sea life.

We are against any federal or state government organization from releasing water from Lake Okeechobee to any body of water that eventually enters the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean. Releases this past year into the Caloosahatchee and St Lucie Rivers by the Army Corp of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District flowed up to 1.4 Billion gallons a day directly into the Gulf of Mexico.

These waters are known to contain pesticides, chemicals, and other carcinogens from the farming and sugar industry surrounding the Lake.   As a result, during summer of 2018 millions of fish, thousands of dolphins, sea turtles, manatees, cormorants and pelicans were killed when the polluted water of Lake Okeechobee was “dumped” into the Gulf of Mexico and dramatically enhanced the Red Tide.

This practice, in addition to its barbarism toward nature, has also dramatically impacted Florida’s tourism.  Initial studies also indicate it has a direct effect on human health through breathing of air along the coast near the affected waters.

Many of us voted for you.  Some of us didn’t.  We all believe you will do the right thing.

Thank you for listening to the people.
