Allow Dogs on the Beach from Zelda St. to University Blvd
Allow Dogs on the Beach from Zelda St. to University Blvd
Why this petition matters
Dogs have been prohibited on Volusia beaches since 1987, when the county's 47-mile shoreline was consolidated under county control. This decision included banning your dog(s) to be with you while driving on the beach. Dogs and their humans are now forced to go to a "beach" that is inland (not oceanside), full of sand spurs and not easily accessed by people with physical limitations or handicaps.
We are asking for the area between Zelda St and University Blvd (½ mile stretch) to be that section. It is located half way between the Lighthouse Pointe Park (inland beach) and the Flagler County dog beach (oceanside). After looking into possible environmental impacts this area is considered Urban Zone. Sea turtle nesting, shore birds and dunes in these areas are minimal and this particular section has very low human population, even during peak seasons. This area also is a driving section of the beach which would allow for people with physical limitations and handicaps to access it easier.
Let’s bring back a part of Volusia County's Home Rule Charter
Sec. 205.1. - The beach: Public right of access and use.
The public has a right of access to the beaches and a right to use the beaches for recreation and other customary purposes. This right of access and use is a public trust, which the council shall by ordinance define, protect, and enforce.
Please sign this petition to start bringing back dog beaches within Volusia County where well-behaved canine citizens can exercise in a clean, safe environment without endangering or annoying people, property, or wildlife.
