Warum ist diese Petition wichtig?

+++ ENGLISH VERSION BELOW +++

ENGLISH VERSION

At present, the future of the Institute of Scandinavian Studies at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is at stake. Over the last few years, the university has already decided to close Institutes for Dutch and Finno-Ugrian Studies as well as the Institute of Indology; Scandinavian Studies are now next in line with the broader European trend of closing small Humanities departments. As (former) students of these subjects, we consider the threat to them unacceptable and unconscionable. We are here to take a stand against the closing down of the Institute in Göttingen and other small Humanities departments. The University of Göttingen presents itself as a “European Institution” with a broad and comprehensive choice of subjects, as an institution offering the full breadth of academic subjects where one can study almost anything. “Almost anything” is now, however, being reduced institute by institute, thereby not only restricting the choice of present and future students, but also diminishing the university’s international reputation, especially with regard to the Humanities, and making it less attractive for students from Germany and other countries.

The looming closure of Scandinavian Studies in Göttingen will not only impact students of the subject in Göttingen, however; the language courses offered at the Instutite are being taken for extra credits by students from all other faculties at the university as well. Göttingen is the only university in Niedersachsen which offers Scandinavian Studies and the corresponding language courses as well as courses on Scandinavian culture, which is of interest also to, for example, law and business students looking to work in Scandinavia. Beyond that, the Institute in Göttingen is also the only one between Munich and Kiel that offers Icelandic language courses beyond the basic language levels; the loss of this Institute is therefore going to affect Scandinavian Studies in Germany as a whole.

Behind the current threat to the Institute are cost saving measures imposed on the universities in general by the politicians in the federal state of Niedersachsen; they are meant to help with the costs incurred by the pandemic. The Faculty of Humanities is therefore required to cut their costs by about 2%, corresponding to the money spent on two professors and a few lecturers. But instead of cutting these costs by looking to subjects with five or even more than ten steady professors, the university is choosing instead to close down a smaller institute, which has a steady and high number of students and enjoys international recognition not least by the research projects associated with it, for example in the subject of Runology.

One of the main reasons why the university has chosen Scandinavian Studies is that, due to the professoral position currently being vacant, the Institute is an easy target for such cuttings. Moreover, the Institute has fewer opportunities and people in the right positions to defend itself. This only serves to show how arbitrary and opportunistic the university’s decision is. The Institute has no representative in the committees making the decision, and other members of said committees are looking to protect their own first. As a result, it is looking likely that Scandinavian Studies are not only going to lose their only professoral position, but its very existence – which would not be the case with other, bigger subjects with several professoral positions.

The readiness with which the university is willing to sacrifice a whole subject and Institute is a scandal in itself; it is even more scandalous that no person at the Institute itself has so far been officially informed of the threat the Institute is facing (20.4.2021). Neither the employees nor the students have been made aware that their Institute may be closed in the near future. It is only thanks to sympathetic sources that we have even received prior knowledge of this, and it is looking very much like the closure of the Institute was supposed to be presented to those most affected and involved as a matter of fact – most likely to avoid resistance.

With this petition, we are letting the Faculty Council, the Faculty of Humanities and the university as a whole know that we are not willing to simply step aside and let our subject be closed down. We are well aware of the current crisis our university and our country are facing; we are daily witnesses to how the pandemic is making life difficult. But closing down one small, unique subject because it happens to approximately fit the requirement of saving about 2% of the overall budget, and because it is at present in the unfortunate position of having a vacancy, is a short-sighted solution that will in the long run affect the university’s international connections and reputation in the Humanities – a choice the consequences of which will only become visible when this pandemic is over. Other than the pandemic, which will be over at some stage, this decision is going to deprive the university permanently of one more choice making it attractive to prospective students and making it attractive as a partner for international research endeavours.

Universities are not businesses – they should not be run like one either!

P.S. We would also like to ask everyone to use the hashtags #endangeredhumanities and #KleineFächerRetten to show their solidarity on Twitter and share their experiences of this sad, European-wide trend with others. Spread the word far and wide!

EDIT: The Fachverband Skandinavistik (the association of Scandinavian Studies in Germany) launched a petition indepently of us. Its aim is to protect the Institutes of Scandinavian Studies at the Universities of Münster, Tübingen, and Göttingen as all three are endangered of being closed down.
