Dedicate a memorial to the victims of the Cinema Follies fire in Washington DC
Why this petition matters
On October 24, 1977 a fire at Cinema Follies in Washington DC killed nine men. The building that housed the cinema was in violation of multiple fire codes; without the violations, these men might have lived. Cinema Follies was a gay club; at the time homosexual acts were illegal and widely considered shameful, and so many of the victims’ names have never even published let alone memorialized. DBT Developments bought the former site of Cinema Follies and are constructing the Kennedy on L residential building on it. The New Washington Land Company is the property manager in place until the condo elects its board and votes on a property management company. We are asking for a memorial, such as a plaque, to be installed in memoriam to the victims on or around the Kennedy on L site.
