Disruption caused by the CoVid lock-downs has put crores of Indians out of work.  They are now vulnerable to hunger and disease.  The governments at the centre and in the states are resorting to conventional solutions of supplying food grains, employment and cash transfers on selective basis.  These solutions are slow and inefficient.  They do not adequately ensure every Indian's right to livelihood, guaranteed under our Constitution.

Universal Basic Income is being tried out the world over and experiments in India have shown encouraging results.  We, the Humanists, demand that the Government of India immediately introduce the Universal Basic Income .  To start with we are asking for Rs 1000 pm to be transferred into the bank account of every Indian above the age of 18, starting Sept 2020 for the next one year.  Individuals not wanting it will simply opt out.

UBI is fast, effective and easy to implement, given the reach of technology.  All of us and our forefathers of many generations have worked toward creating India's vast wealth and hence all of us have to have a share in it. That is the ethical justification for UBI.  As Humanists, we guarantee life with dignity, freedom from fear of violence, and peaceful coexistence.  Universal Basic Income is a step toward ensuring basic dignity for every Indian.
