2027年に横浜市の瀬谷区上瀬谷で、国際園芸博覧会「花博」の開催が予定されています。ところが、この「花博」のための開発で、桜の名所として知られる上瀬谷の「海軍道路」の桜並木が伐採されようとしていることが分かりました。

「海軍道路」の桜並木は3kmの長さに渡り、アーチ状になった桜の美しさで知られています。横浜市はその282本あるソメイヨシノのうち、北側に植えられている226本の大部分を伐採するとしています。「花博」は「SDGsの達成」や「グリーン社会の実現」を掲げた事業ですが、そのために美しい桜並木が失われてしまう。「花博」は環境破壊のイベントなのでしょうか？　桜並木を残す方法はないのでしょうか？

山中竹春横浜市長は「海軍道路」のソメイヨシノは老朽化が進み、伐採せざるを得ないと市議会で述べました。しかし、伐採されようとしているソメイヨシノの多くは、樹齢40年ほどしか経過しておらず、健全度も高いと診断されています。倒木の危険がある桜はすでに伐採済みであり、現在残っている桜は適切な手入れによりまだまだ生き続けると専門家も指摘しています。200本以上も一斉に伐採することが必要な状況とは思われません。

上瀬谷の魅力はその自然にあります。美しい桜並木は横浜市民の大切な財産です。お隣の東京都でも、神宮外苑の再開発計画によって、1000本以上の樹木が伐採されようとしていて、反対の声が上がっています。乱開発に伴う樹木の伐採〜環境破壊は、全国各地でも起こっている問題です。瀬谷区、横浜市に限らない多くの人々と情報と問題意識を共有できれば、と考えて、このキャンペーンを立ち上げました。

横浜市は「花博」をめぐる開発計画を見直し、「海軍道路」の桜並木を伐採しないでください。

In 2027, an international horticultural exposition, called the Hana Haku (Flower Expo), is scheduled to be held in Kamiseya, Seya-ku, Yokohama City. However, we have learned that the development for the Expo is going to cut down the rows of cherry trees along the Navy Road in Kamiseya, which is known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot.

The "Navy Road" is 3 km long and is known for its beautiful arches of cherry trees. Yokohama City is planning to cut down most of the Someiyoshino cherry trees planted on either side of the road – 226 out of 282 total. The Hana Haku Flower Expo is supposedly a project that aims to "achieve the SDGs" and "realize a green society," but in doing so, beautiful rows of cherry trees will be lost. It doesn’t make any sense for a horticultural exhibition to be an environmentally destructive event. Surely there must be some way to preserve the rows of cherry trees.

Yokohama Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka stated at a city council meeting that the Someiyoshino cherry trees on the Navy Road are so decrepit that they must be cut down. However, many of the trees that are about to be cut down are only about 40 years old and have been diagnosed as being in good health. It is Cutting down more than 200 trees at once is simply not necessary.

The charm of Kamiseya lies in its nature. The beautiful rows of cherry trees are an important asset for the citizens of Yokohama. In neighboring Tokyo, more than 1,000 trees are about to be cut down due to the redevelopment plan of Jingu Gaien Garden, and there are voices of opposition. The cutting down of trees due to overdevelopment -- destruction of the environment -- is a problem that is occurring in many other parts of Japan as well. We launched this campaign in the hope of sharing information and awareness of the problem with many people, not only in Seya-ku and Yokohama City.

Yokohama City should revise its development plan for the Hana Haku Flower Expo and not cut down the rows of cherry trees along the Navy Road.
