Why this petition matters

Started by Melissa Kmiecik

Right now Dropcatching websites (ex: dropcatch.com, namebright.com, snapnames.com, namejet.com, etc..) use backordering services to help individuals get "pending delete" domains. The service is being abused and should be reevaluated.  For those who can't afford the backordering service they have to rely on hopefully getting it before one of the dropcatch websites does, but theres a catch, the second you look up a domain name these dropcatch sites some how see it. countless times domains have been looked up, avaliable but by the time you get to checkout it's already been registered. Even without a backorder in place these websites capture the dropped domain within mlliseconds, they then re-sell the names at overly inflated prices.

With this petition we can get ICANN to implement some new rules.

1. Dropcatch websites must register with ICANN as a drop catch website.

2.Dropcatch websites can't capture names until a 5 - 24 hours after the name is released and able to be re-registered.

3. Dropcatch websites can not register a domain under their business name, they must register it under the customer who backordered it through them. dropcatch website can and should be listed as registrar

4. first come, first serve order. Dropcatch sites must give the domain to the first person to backorder it, If no one wants it they must relinguish control and return it. They cannot under any circumstance hold onto a domain that was backordered.         4.a) Dropcatch sites can opt instead to hold a private auction between backorder cusotmers. With this option 40% of the winning bid must be payed to ICANN.

5. Dropcatch sites can still get domains for their company to sell, but they must wait 1(one) week after it was dropped before registering it. this include names they had to release because the backorders decided not to go through with the order. For released backorder domains the 1 week starts once the name is released again.

6.Dropcatch sites can and should charge a nomial fee for cancelled orders after they acquired the name, a $10 - $20 fee should suffice, and it can help them recoup some costs.

This is just a sample of what ICANN can enforce dropcatch sites to obey by, and they should.  Too many times people loose their domain name because they can't afford the prices drop catch sites get, and ICANN should stop allowing these sites to monoplolize expired and pending delete domains.   with this change we can cut down on Domain sharks who take most of the domains people want just to resell them back, we can cut down on all those bizarre websites that say you won something when really you didn't, it's just spam, we can cut down the amout of spam websites.

We need to hold ICANN accountable for Dropcatching sites using dirty tricks, ICANN allowed them to practice this way and it needs to stop. You should be able to get the domain you want without having to pay 5,000 dollars after watching your domain finally become available just to be snatched up by a dropcatch website.

with this change we can make the practices stop, and regular every day people can finally get the domain they want without worry.
