Introduce remote voting for Members of Parliament
Introduce remote voting for Members of Parliament
Why this petition matters
Members of Parliament who are not able to attend the House of Commons cannot vote remotely.
With the introduction of remote voting for MPs they would be able to vote in the Commons regardless of the MPs mobility, agenda or distance.
The Speakers Office, Procedures Committee and the UK Government have it within their power to bring our democracy into the digital age.
Remote voting would allow the electorate representation regardless of a Members mobility, work agenda, illness etc.
Votes in the Commons are currently recorded on an iPad, which begs the question: why isn't a technological solution in place for MPs to vote remotely?
Current circumstances for remote or "proxy" voting:
- MPs on parental leave
That's right - currently this is the only circumstance where MPs are allowed to vote remotely. Oh, it's only a trial. It's a step in the right direction but in a time of such political turmoil it does not go far enough to see the electorate is fully represented.
Benefits we see:
- Better, more effective representation for the electorate
- Encourage MPs to spend more time in their constituency
- MPs in transit less; more time to work
- Reduced carbon emissions
- Reduced travel costs and burden to taxpayer
- No more excuses by MPs for not voting
Examples:
- An MP from the north of England (e.g. Newcastle Upon Tyne) wouldn't have to travel over 500 miles to vote
- MPs who have mobility issues whether disabled or otherwise incapacitated
- MPs who are housebound due to contagious illness such as flu
- MPs in receipt of medical treatment restricting their travel
- MPs are overseas due to their work in the Foreign Office
- Mental health days - a member could be facing heightened anxiety or stress, remote voting could significantly reduce the mental health burden
