Why this petition matters

Started by Protecting Beaches Endangered Species

South Ballina Beach, NSW has been recognised at a governmental level to be the key habitat for an endangered species.  As such it has a site management plan with six conservation management actions that need to be undertaken on this site to ensure the population of threatened species is sustained for the next 100 years.

Due to non-compliance from governing bodies this site management plan was never implemented and as such South Ballina Beach has been degraded to such an extent that in order for it to recover we must immediately stop any human activity that is contributing to the decline. These activities have been identified.

The impacts of 4WDs, commercial pipi harvesting, dogs roaming and inappropriate human activity have been documented internationally and locally for a number of decades.
What is needed now is an in depth ecological study that will document the existing state of decline and observe recovery across all areas of the beach, dune system, littoral forest and the habitat of all species. Protecting this beach and its endangered species does not exist as a single entity. It is intimately connected to the ocean, the dunes the littoral forest and us.

Australia has one of the highest levels of native species loss. In this case by simply banning 4WD's we can save several endangered shore birds and an entire ecosystem.
