Family doctor-led PHC teams for Africa
Family doctor-led PHC teams for Africa
Why this petition matters
A High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage, by the United Nations and comprising all heads of state in New York in September 2019 want to commit to universal health coverage in a global effort for health for all. However, a wonderful draft UHC statement to be adopted there does NOT explicitly address human resources for PHC specifically, the need for everyone to have access to a family doctor.
In Africa this is possible with a family doctor-led team of clinical officers, nurses, etc. but instead family doctors are simply ignored and it is planned that Africans should be happy with an unsupported community health worker for first contact care. African family doctors are committed to universal health coverage, primary health care and building the capacity of primary health care teams at scale in Africa. See the Kampala Commitment 2019.

37. Strengthen PHC for UHC 37. Expand the delivery of and prioritize investments in primary health care, including the human resource of family doctor-led PHC teams, as the cornerstone of a sustainable health system and the foundation for achieving universal health coverage, while strengthening an integrated and effective referral system for secondary and tertiary care;
