Why this petition matters

Started by Nick Hubble

Manchester City Council have recently announced a £9.1 million "green transformation" to Great Ancoats Street, which, in their own words, "will radically improve the way pedestrians, cyclists and motorists travel".

However, the scheme will take out the existing cycle lanes without replacing them. Instead, we are being made unspecific promises for theoretical alternative routes.

With currently five lanes of traffic, there is more than enough space for protected cycling provision as well as improved footways for pedestrians on Great Ancoats St.

We petition Manchester City Council to halt the development on Great Ancoats Street until they have included sufficient provision for walking & cycling along the road length and at crossing points.

We also call on Manchester City Council:

• To restate its commitment from Chris Boardman's Made to Move plan to "Ensure all upcoming public realm and infrastructure investments, alongside all related policy programmes, have walking & cycling integrated at the development stage"

• To commit at least 10% of its permanent transport budget to active travel;

• To commit to Bee-Network-standard provision for walking and cycling in all infrastructure investments, no matter what the funding stream;

• To account for the true cost of motor use to society, and the true benefit of active travel, when taking transport investment decisions.
