Why this petition matters

Started by jelsy cho

On the 29th of December 2018, during the China Super League match between Tianjin Quanjian Team and Bayi Team, key umpire Cao Han Ming together with his co-umpire made an highly unprofessional and unfair call towards athlete Fang Bo.

Both of the qualified ITTF blue badge umpires initially gave the score to Fang Bo during that point. Opponent Zhao Zhao Yan suddenly called out “let” after returning Fang Bo’s service when the ball was deemed out by the referees. Most importantly, during the serve, none of the umpires nor Zhao Zhao Yan mentioned that it was a net ball.

Following Zhao Zhao Yan’s call, both the umpires immediately changed their verdicts to a “let” and requested for a re-service. In several videos, both umpires looked at each other in confusion and it was obvious they none of them has noticed that it was a net ball. So why did the umpires changed their calls to a “let” ball to side athlete Zhao Zhao Yan even when it was clear that none of them saw the ball touch the net? To add on, a slow-mo replay video recorded has further proved that IT WAS NOT A NET BALL. Could there be some kind of bribery going on then?

We highly doubt the professionalism of Umpire Cao Han Ming as well as his co-umpire whom we can’t identify yet. We herely petition to reconsider the qualification of ITTF umpire Cao Han Ming in order to prevent such unfair and unjustified judgement from arising again in future international matches.

Thank you for reading and it is much appreciated if you could help to sign our petition here because the China Table Tennis Association is reluctant to issue any penalties to the aforementioned referees. We hope to seek a reasonable explanation via another channel and by highlighting this situation to the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
