Why this petition matters

WHAT IS MORNINGTON SAFELINK?

The Mornington Safelink is a path between the existing infrastructure (Peninsula Link) at the Mornington Tourist Railway in Moorooduc to the Civic Reserve Recreation Centre in Mornington.  This project is "shovel ready" which means the majority of the work has been completed, it just requires lots of public support!

This community path will incorporate safe walking, running and cycling traverse points across Bungower Road and Mornington-Tyabb Roads for school children and elderly/disabled members of the community for people of all ages and abilities.

WHY DO WE NEED A COMMUNITY PATH?

The Peninsula is growing, both in vibrant young families, and an ageing population.  We experience an extraordinary number of visitors every year.

Obesity rates are rising, and the technology age is having an impact, particularly in school children.  Local roads are busier than ever before, reaching capacity throughout the day, they are deemed unsafe for any road user other than a vehicle.  Frustration levels are rising.

Mental health is seeing its highest impact on society ever.

In order to mitigate many of these environmental and lifestyle factors, we require more connected communities, with the ability to move between areas safely, providing our members with options to catch up for a walk, teach the kids how to ride a bike, walk the dog.  We need the ability for newly formed community groups to operate in a safe environment.

It is imperative we enable learning of our indigenous background and provide opportunities to do so in known locations, so we do not lose our ancestry as progression continues.

Valid alternative active transport options are key in the fight for climate change.  Elderly require further autonomy and confidence to navigate in a safe environment allowing independence.  We need to enable children to make decisions and learn in a safe and positive way.

WHO IS THE MORNINGTON SAFELINK GROUP?

Mornington  Safelink Group is a group of local residents working in partnership with Mornington Peninsula Shire and local stakeholders. We are asking you to sign and support the proposed Mornington Safelink.  In doing so, you will be assisting to connect Sporting Precincts, Schools, Shopping Centres, Residential and Aged Care Facilities and Families with a shared resource that benefits all groups.

Dear Mayor,

We want to see the completion of the Mornington Safelink, between Moorooduc and Mornington Stations. It is a logical extension of the PenLink trail that currently ends at Moorooduc. It will link Mornington’s shopping, schools, sports, residential and commercial precincts and provide active and healthy recreation opportunities. Please tell us of the Council’s plans to prioritise this?
