Why this petition matters

Today it was announced that the main casting for the new Apple TV+ series, "The Crowded Room" was completed, and filming is set to begin. If you're unaware, the The Crowded Room stars Milligan, a man with Dissociative Identity Disorder (repeatedly referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder, an outdated and offensive term, in the advertisements.)

Milligan is portrayed as a criminal mastermind, in court for murder that he is later acquitted of due to his "other personality" that he seemingly has no control over. The plot of this movie makes it screamingly obvious that no actual systems (the term for those living with disorders such as DID that causes them to have splits or alters) were consulted in the writing of this series. This marks the second major time in media that systems have been portrayed as "evil" or "dangerous", the first being the horror movie "Split" that is still many people's first impressions of systems to this day.

When the series was announced on Twitter, many systems took to their personal accounts to express their disapproval and discomfort. The social impact this series could have on the reputation and lives of systems is extremely detrimental. Systems are not dangerous, they are not uncontrollable, and they're not the perfect villain. We are people with trauma who are trying to live our lives and spread awareness about our condition. This series is a step in the wrong direction and will only add to the stigma that systems are working so hard to overcome.

Please sign this petition to cancel the production of The Crowded Room and let systems tell their own stories that accurately reflect their lives and their experiences.
