Release Logan Mailloux from the Montreal Canadiens
Release Logan Mailloux from the Montreal Canadiens
Why this petition matters
Last night, Logan Mailloux was drafted to the NHL 31st overall by the Montreal Canadiens. This was a week following his decision to withdraw himself from the draft due to criminal charges he faced while playing hockey abroad in Sweden. Mailloux was charged and fined for non-consentually filming a girl during a sexual encounter and sharing it widely with friends and teammates. This is a blatant act of sexual misconduct, for which the victim is receiving 0 justice. Mailloux, despite his athletic abilities, does not have the character to be a professional athlete, let alone a first round selection to the National Hockey League. I want to hold Marc Bergevin and the Montreal Canadiens accountable for this unforgivable error and try to make right this wrong. The only way this can happen is by cutting Mailloux from the team, and having him face a proper criminal trial, including extensive reparations to his victim that are far greater than the text message apology and the $1500 USD fine he faced. Victims of sexual misconduct deserve justice and Mailloux’s actions are more than a “simple mistake”, but are blatant crimes. He could face up to 2 years in Sweden, but is instead out living free, despite his prior conviction. He has faced no punishment and thus the victim has recieved no justice. As a victim myself, I find it important to speak up for others and seek out justice in situations where the same couldnt be done for myself. Justice for all victims. #METOO
