Why this petition matters

Started by Daily Express

Britain should boost the fight against the climate crisis by scrapping VAT on low and zero carbon products.

It is time to reform this unjust tax system which makes green and low carbon products more expensive than they need to be.

The current tax regime holds back progress towards our national green targets while giving an edge to conventional high carbon products and rewarding polluters.

Solar panels can currently carry 20 per cent VAT while domestic coal carries just 5 per cent.

Green energy pays a carbon levy even though it produces none but major industrial energy users do not pay the same carbon tax when burning fossil fuels.

The Government currently gives tax breaks worth nearly £12billion-a-year to fossil fuel producers but spends just £8billion-a-year subsidising renewable energy.

If it is serious about reducing emissions to net zero - which means cutting emissions and offsetting any that remain through projects such as tree planting - the UK Government has to encourage, not punish, green innovation.

That's why the Daily Express has teamed up with Dale Vince and all the country's leading environmental, wildlife and conservation groups to demand the Government now take action, reform the tax system and genuinely make Britain greener.
