Why this petition matters

Started by Phil Phillips

The council is auctioning off an important part of our history on 24th March. We cannot let this happen. King's Mill should be saved for our community. The time to act is now. Sign this petition to stop the auction and tell the council to  transfer the building to our Group.

We are the Melin y Brenin Community Group, a passionate and dedicated group of local people who have come together to save the mill for our community. We have a diverse range of skills and expertise and the drive and ability to run a sustainable not for profit enterprise to serve our community and maintain the building and grounds as a community hub for all to enjoy.  For have 3 years we have fought to lease the building and grounds from the council to ensure that King's Mill remains a community asset, complying with every request the council has made, but despite this the council has suddenly decided to sell the building to the highest bidder. This means another part of Wrexham’s rich heritage will be lost to the people forever.

The original mill dates from the 14th century and was rebuilt in1769 by Philip Yorke. It was taken over by the National Trust in 1973 and gifted to the Council. It has been empty since 2012 when the Council decided to dispose of it, but still remains the gateway to the Clywedog Trail for the town. We are in a partnership which is trying to restore and revitalise the flagship trail of which the Mill is an important part. There is a covenant on the building which states that it should be kept for community use which the council blatantly ignored when it decided to sell the mill rather than transfer it to a community enterprise.

We urge the council to stop this auction, honour the covenant and return the mill to our community. We want to preserve and promote the mill's story for future generations.  The time to act is now.  Please sign this petition to save our heritage, save our history and save King's Mill before it’s too late.
