When our community voted YES to approve Bond MM, we voted to REBUILD Del Mar Heights Elementary School. We never dreamed that they would take the bond money that we gave them and eliminate a majority of the field; open recreational space that is scarce in our community and that we can never replace. The proposed design rips out the green heart of our community and breaks it into little pieces!  It even impacts the ability of the public to enjoy the beautiful views from the sidewalk above. We respectfully request that DMUSD revisit their proposed design and find a way to keep the large field intact.

The rendering of the new school misleadingly shows the proposed green space as only 5% less than that of the existing school. That number refers to ANYTHING that is 'green', NOT open field. Their “Existing Green Space” DOES NOT include the  SF of the current baseball and kickball fields.  Their “Proposed Green Space” DOES include the SF of a planned amphitheater, a planned green lot in the Northwest corner (that isn't even inside the new fenced campus), and perimeter grass!

If the school district tries to close Del Mar Hills School again in the future, the student capacity at the Heights will increase significantly. That would leave our community with one, small field at a Del Mar Heights "mega school". Is that what we want for the future of this community?

These kids are 5-12 years old and they need room to run and engage in free play in order to be able to sit in a classroom and learn. That is not possible in an “amphitheater” or some random green areas around the perimeter. Of course it is necessary to upgrade buildings with collaborative spaces and more light, but the field is just as essential to the children’s academic, social and physical growth. And it is just as essential to our community.
