Include chess as an event in future Paralympic games.
Why this petition matters
A subset of disabled individuals is unable to compete in the Paralympics due to their inability to utilize adaptive sports equipment. The current sport class functional classification system, the extent to which an athlete’s impairment impacts on sport performance, does not include this classification.
Chess is an International recreational activity that is also a competitive event. This “spirit of competition” and competitive exceptionalism resides in those who are physically disabled that is easily transferable to this Paralympic event. Having numerous individuals in wheel/powerchairs is logistically cumbersome and not accommodated for in standard chess venues.
The current International Chess Organization (FIDE) has a chess numeric rating system and titles. The US Chess Federation (USCF) has a domestic numeric rating system and title system. Both have standardized rules and Tournament Directors/Arbiters.
