Why this petition matters

Started by Alisha Johnson

Congressman John Lewis stood on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Sunday, March 4, 2018, in Selma, Ala., during the annual commemoration of "Bloody Sunday," the day in 1965 when voting rights protesters were attacked by police as they attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge. “There were 600 of us who marched across the bridge that day in a peaceful, nonviolent fashion when they were beaten. This bridge has become a staple for civil rights. It should lose its current name and be named after Congressman John Lewis. The history of the March that took place there is in the background due to the bridge currently being named after a white supremacist. It should named for it’s progress. It’s current name just shows how much further we have to go as a people.
