Why this petition matters

Started by Rick Donah

The winter economy of the central Adirondacks includes many smaller hamlets and a few villages, including Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, Long Lake, Newcomb, Cranberry Lake, Star Lake, and Lake Clear that depend on winter recreation to keep small businesses operating.  Many of the areas businesses, mostly tourism-based small motels, restaurants, service stations, grocery stores, retailers, etc. can only produce a profit during the busy summer months of June, July, August & early September.

For over 18 years, the most popular ski area in this geographic area has been idle due to the financial failure of a planned resort development known as the ACR.  A regional group of volunteers known as ARISE operated the ski area with donations from 2010 to 2016.  Now the property is in foreclosure due to the owners failure to pay over $500,000 in property taxes.

This petition will demonstrate the importance of revitalizing the Big Tupper Ski Area with the assistance of New York State and its ORDA Agency, which has multiple ski resort operations in the Adirondacks and Catskills of New York.  Currently, Whiteface Mountain and the other Lake Placid venues are slated to receive over $250,000.000 million in NYS taxpayer assistance; leaving the majority of the Adirondack Park to continue to suffer from a lack of private investment, a lower quality of life, and economic stagnation.  It's time to change this equation and your support of this petition will help.  SKI BIG TUPPER should be part of the NYS/ORDA strategic investment plan for the benefit of many central Adirondack communities!
