Hagia Sophia, in Istanbul Turkey is the former Greek Orthodox Christian  patriarchal Cathedral later an Ottoman imperial mosque and to date a museum.It was built in AD 537, during the reign of Justinian. It is considered a jewel of Byzantium, an architectural masterpiece.  Hagia Sophia's true meaning is "The Church of the Holy Wisdom",dedicated to Christ as the second person of the Holy Trinity and the reason.

Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum in 1934 when the then Turkish President Kemal Ataturk recognised its historical value. In 1985 the Cathedral became a world heritage site under the protection of  UNESCO. As a museum it can act as a bridge of peace between Christians and Muslims and be enjoyed by people  around the world.       

Today the 10th July 2020, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan,declared without discussion with the Director General of UNESCO to change the status of Hagia Sophia back into a mosque. This will affect its universal appeal and will be a major affront to all Christians. The U.S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said "We urge the government of Turkey to continue to maintain the Hagia Sophia as a museum, as an exemplar of its commitment to respect Turkey's diverse faith traditions and history and to ensure it remains accessible to all".

I respectfully call on the U.K. Government to intervene and use its power to urge the Turkish President that to change Hagia Sophia Status from museum to a mosque, will be a Travesty of Justice not only for the Greek Orthodox faithful, but other Orthodox nations and Christians everywhere.
