From the North Des Moines Community Fridge: 

"We received a letter in the mail today from the City of Des Moines Neighborhood Zoning Division stating that we have 30 days to take down the community fridge or we will start being fined by the city; $750 for the first fine and $1000 for every one after that.

This fridge has been up for less than a month and the use of it grows everday. The amount of food we see go through it each day is astounding, the need is clearly present.

We do not view the fridge as harmful to anyone or anything. It is in fact a beautiful display of the community coming together to take care of each other. Therefore, we demand that it stays and we ask that you demand it stays as well.

Our city has refused over and over again to come up with real solutions to combat food insecurity which is what causes things like community fridges to become a necessity. Instead of spending their time, money and resources on stalking harmless community projects, they need to put that effort into real, tangible solutions. Until then, all community fridges will stay.
