Why this petition matters

Started by Meghan O’Rourke

Hi, my name is Meghan O’Rourke and I am a senior at Wakefield High. I think I can speak on behalf of my class when I say that we want to graduate together. I know it is easier said than done, but I have seen numerous graduations on social media spread out on the field with everyone there and there has been talk of surrounding towns doing the same. So why can’t we? From senior nights, walking through our elementary schools in our caps and gowns, senior week, and senior prom, they have been moments we have been waiting for since we first stepped into that building. Despite the activities that we could have had, what really matters is that we will never get to finish our 12 years as a class. Yes, people are doing whatever they can to help, the parade is one example, but whatever is done will not fill that void. We won’t be able to walk down the halls one last time, we can’t say goodbye to the teachers that have had such a huge impact on our lives, and we can’t walk out those doors one last time with the friends we have made. Some of those friends I may never see again. That's why I ask this one request, to have graduation as a whole. We need the closure, splitting up our graduation into groups isn’t going to feel complete at all. I won't settle for that. I can’t speak for everyone when I say this but I have talked to multiple parents who have said that they would give up going to our graduation if that means that we could all be together. I do know that our class would want to be there as a whole, to throw our caps in the air together and to watch each one of us walk across the stage as a class. This time in our lives has been emotionally exhausting for everyone, not just us seniors, but this is such a huge milestone in our lives. We are walking into a new chapter of our lives, without any closure of the past. It has been said that graduations can be held after July 19th, so what’s the rush? Let's not take the easy route by splitting us up. We want to be together. I take great pride in saying that I am a part of this school, and I want to end it on a good note. We have worked extremely hard these past years and I know we can figure out a plan. Thank you.
