Why this petition matters

Started by Rickie Slaughter

Rickie Slaughter has been wrongfully convicted of a crime he did not commit and has been unjustly serving time in prison for the past 15 years.

In 2004, an unfortunate series of events happened where someone was robbed at gunpoint and was shot in the face. The perpetrators of that heinous crime are still free today, Rickie, on the other hand, is paying the price for being wrongfully tried.

At his trial, Rickie was subject to prosecutorial misconduct that misled a jury into thinking that he was guilty. The prosecutors in his trial withheld evidence that would have proved Rickie's innocence about when the incident happened. That evidence, a 911 call, happened at the same time people testified that Rickie was on the other side of town. Instead, the prosecutors created a false narrative that Rickie drove from one side of town to the other and deliberately caused the attempted murder. This false narrative would have been impossible to tell if the 911 dispatch report was presented to the jury.

Additionally, Rickie was subject to racial profiling in a photo line-up presented to witnesses. During the investigation, there were two sets of photo line-ups. In the first, Rickie was the only person whose photograph was made to stand out. This resulted in Rickie being misidentified in this photo line-up, which prosecutors told the jury about. In the second photo line-up, there was no tampering with Rickie's picture, and as a result, Rickie was not identified. However, the prosecutor DID NOT present this evidence to the jury at trial, once again depraving Rickie of a fair trial guaranteed by our Constitution.

Fortunately, Rickie may have a second chance. He has ongoing federal court hearings where this evidence has been brought to light, in which he is asking a federal judge to order a new trial at which this newfound evidence proving Rickie's innocence can be presented to a jury.

We need our community to stand up for what's right, so please sign this petition and help demand that Rickie is given a new trial in which he can fairly present new evidence of his actual innocence. Innocent men should not be convicted for crimes that they did not commit. And prosecutors need to be held accountable when they do not release evidence that would have proven a man's innocence.

Thank you for signing this petition and supporting Rickie. Please encourage others to do the same and check out justiceforrickieslaughter.com.
