Allow the possession of Java Sparrows in the US
Why this petition matters
As of now, importation of the Java Sparrow into the United States is banned, and in California, Georgia, and Wyoming their possession is illegal. My mission is to change this in the most effective and safe way possible to ensure that when the birds are in captivity, they are having proper care taken of them and that they are not able to escape and potentially threaten any part of the American environment or agriculture.
The Java Sparrow makes for an amazing aviary or companion bird that many avian enthusiasts and hobbyists have longed to see more commonly in the United States that, due to the restrictions provided by the USFWS, they cannot. Because the Java Sparrow is a non-native species, I propose that we make it possible to acquire Java Sparrows by having the potential caretakers of the bird(s) pass a written test on the proper care needed to healthily sustain a Java Sparrow as well as ensure that they will not lose possession of the bird. This way, we can ensure that the birds themselves are not harmed due to improper care and that the birds do not escape to bring any potential harm to the environment or agriculture near them.
Please give feedback and let me know if you think I should change anything!
