UK Govt introduce Alistair Carmichael's Private Members Bill on Hong Kong
UK Govt introduce Alistair Carmichael's Private Members Bill on Hong Kong
Why this petition matters
The UK Government has a legal and moral obligation to uphold the Sino-British Joint Declaration (One Country, Two Systems), which was signed in 1984, handing Hong Kong back to mainland China in 1997, so far UK Govt's past and present, have taken no concrete action to hold the Chinese Communist Party, accountable for its breaches of the agreement.
Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael, in February introduced a Private Members bill on Hong Kong, if the bill was to become law, it would “re-open the offer of a British National Overseas (BNO) passports, for Hong Kong citizens and extend the scheme to provide the “right of abode”, allowing a person to live or work indefinitely in the UK”.
This bill is a step in the right direction, however, due to the COVID 19 Pandemic business in the UK Parliament has either been cancelled, or delayed and the original date for the Second Reading of this bill, has been delayed to 11th September 2020, this is not the first time this has been delayed.
The people of Hong Kong cannot wait any longer for the UK to take action, since the introduction of the Private Members Bill back in February, the Hong Kong Govt has encouraged LegCo (Parliament in Hong Kong), to pass a law making it illegal to mock the Chinese National Anthem, as well as some Pro Beijing Politicians in Hong Kong, encouraging the reintroduction, of the extremely controversial, Article 23 National Security Legislation.
By the time the Private Members Bill even comes up for its Second Reading, LegCo might of already rushed through, these pieces of legislation, as it has been encouraged to do so, regardless of how many people protest against their passage, the UK Govt should table Alistair Carmichael's Bill, as Govt backed legislation and should seek to introduce and pass this legislation as soon as possible, to help further deter the Hong Kong Govt and the Chinese Communist Party from, further eroding Hong Kong’s autonomy, agreed under Sino-British Joint Declaration.
