Why this petition matters

Started by Emily Hubbard

Every year in the UK, upwards of 1 billion plastic bags are bought, sold and used. These plastic bags will often only be used once and will soon be put into bins, or left to skim pavements being pushed around by the wind. Many of these plastic bags only contain one or two items and are only purchased when people have to quickly nip to the shop. Since the plastic bag tax in 2015 charging 5p per bag, recently increasing to 10p, it's undeniable that our plastic bag use has decreased, their sales falling by 86%-but this is not enough.

Per person (UK), we will produce 76KG of plastic waste per year. The plastic used can take over 500 years to decompose. The first step was plastic straws, now we need to hold the government and supermarkets accountable and ban plastic bags.

If we continue to ignore these issues and continue to manufacture plastic bags- an item so easily replaceable by tote bags or the plastic bags we already own- we will single-handedly be destroying the future-OUR future.

We need to take action. Now.
