Net als veel andere Europese landen heeft Nederland eeuwenlang turf gewonnen. Veengebieden werden droog gelegd om weilanden te creëren voor vee. Daarnaast werd voor het vervaardigen van brandstof de gedroogde turf in baksteen grote stukjes gestoken. Meer recentelijk wordt turf ook gebruikt als ingrediënt van potgrond voor professioneel en hobby tuinbouw. Toen veen vanaf 1992 niet meer voor de productie van potgrond deugde, kwam er een einde aan de veenwinning in Nederland. Sindsdien importeert Nederland turf voornamelijk vanuit de Baltische Staten.

Wat is er zo belangrijk aan turf? Het behoud van veengebieden is van groot belang voor het behoud van ons klimaat. Veengebieden slaan meer koolstofdioxide op dan alle andere vegetatietypen op de wereld bij elkaar. Dit betekent dat de verwerking van veen een enorme uitstoot van koolstofdioxide veroorzaakt. Bovendien vinden wij dat natuur op zichzelf waardevol is, aan bescherming behoeft, en ook dat het intrinsiek verbonden is aan de mens en hun cultuur. Daarnaast bestaan er alternatieven voor potgrond zonder turf die op basis van compost, schors humus of houtvezels worden gemaakt.

Met deze pe(a)tition roepen wij de Staten-Generaal op om turf als ingrediënt van commerciële tuinbouwaarde die in Nederland wordt gekocht en verkocht, stapsgewijs af te bouwen en uiteindelijk te verbieden. Hopelijk kunnen we met voldoende handtekeningen de aandacht van de Staten-Generaal en heel Nederland vestigen op het turf!

The Netherlands, like many other European nations, has been exploiting peat for centuries, draining peatlands to create pastures for cattle, to burn for energy, and more recently, for use in professional and amateur horticultural soil. When the Netherlands ran out of peat viable for use in horticulture in 1992, they turned to peatlands in the Baltic states, extracting peat there to meet their needs.  

What’s so important about peat? Well, the preservation of peatlands is vitally important both from a climatic perspective - peatlands are the world’s largest terrestrial carbon store, meaning that their degradation releases massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the air - and from the perspective that nature is intrinsically valuable and intertwined with the development of a region’s culture. Furthermore, peat-free alternatives for horticultural soil are available, being made from compost, bark humus, and wood fibers. Thus, 

Therefore, with this pe(a)tition we call upon the Dutch government to incrementally phase out and eventually ban the use of peat (turf) within commercial horticultural soils that are bought and sold within the Netherlands. Hopefully with enough signatures, we can attract the attention of the Dutch Parliament and the Dutch public as a whole to this vitally important issue!
