Why this petition matters

Started by Connie Hawkins

Small family owned businesses need your help! Indy Go is planning on running the Blue Line Mass Transit System on Washington Street. They intend on having designated lanes for the bus, leaving only one lane east and one lane west for traffic and limited left hand turns. The impact on businesses along the route will force us to go out of business and devastate our families, our employees, their families, and residents in our neighborhoods. It would also endanger pedestrians by directing everyone to the middle of the road to the center stations that is used with this design. Because of the traffic limitations it will cause traffic to divert to residential side streets which will endanger children in the neighborhoods.

Our solution to this problem would be for Indy Go to implement the project with shared lanes, which is what is recommended by their own analysis reports. This would resolve the traffic congestion issue. The design for shared lanes would call for side stations, which would be much safer for pedestrians. The traffic flow not being restricted and businesses being able to get semi deliveries would save our mom and pop shops, some that are third generation owned!

As a second generation business owner that my mom and dad started 43 years ago and a resident in the neighborhood, I care deeply about the many small businesses on Washington Street. My hope is that we can stop this major corporation from destroying the foundations that our families built.

Please sign the petition to save US 40 and keep Washington Street 4 lanes!!!
