Why this petition matters

Started by Harris APC

On March 4, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a statewide emergency due to health concerns associated with COVID-19. On March 19, 2020, Governor Newsom issued a stay at home order requiring California residents to remain in their homes to help slow the spread of the virus.

On March 27, 2020, Governor Newsom issued an order suspending evictions in the State of California, but some sheriffs’ departments continued to perform eviction lockouts, locking tenants out of their homes because they were behind on rent.

Since we started this petition, we have not received any reports of sheriffs locking tenants out of their homes, but to help slow the spread of the virus and keep Californians safe, we are urging Governor Newsom to issue an order that prohibits all sheriffs’ departments in the State of California from performing eviction lockouts until at least 90 days after the COVID-19 state of emergency is lifted.

We are also asking the California Judicial Council to enact an emergency rule that prohibits courts from issuing a writ of execution in eviction cases until at least 90 days after the COVID-19 state of emergency is lifted.

Now, more than ever, California residents need a roof over their heads and a place where they feel safe.

Please sign this petition to help stop eviction lockouts during the COVID-19 crisis.
