This is a letter that was sent to multiple city counsels.

On July 17th, 2020, the nation first witnessed unprecedented action taken by a President in office: we saw federal officers in unmarked vehicles and army gear take to the streets of Portland Oregon causing ciaos and fear throughout the city.  Less than a week after, President Trump is deciding where and when to send these federal troops next, some might already be on their way and we are scared for our safety, our freedoms and what precedent this might set if left unchallenged by you, our City Council. We need your help now more than ever to protect not only our, your citizens’, rights but maintain the rights of our City and State.  WE (i.e., us, the petitioners, you, city council, and the City Police) have an opportunity to join together to protect one another, but we need your help, the help of our City Council. We, your constituents, ask that you:

1. Follow the chorus of Oregon’s elected officials, who have seen the fear and destruction unilaterally imposed upon their own people and city, by sending a clear message to Washington and President Trump that federal troops are not welcome here.  

2. Talk to and coordinate with the Chief of Police

a. Make it clear to them their mission is to Protect and Serve the residents of City and it is their job to protect their citizens from these armed, unmarked federal officers;

b. Remind them of their resident’s 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th Amendment rights; and

c.  Direct them NOT to collaborate or communicate with federal forces of any kind.

3. Communicate the above measures with your constituents in order to provide a sense of calm, unity and security.  

In conclusion, remember that the Tenth Amendment assigns all powers not delegated to the United States, or prohibited to the states, to either the States or to the People. Do not let President Trump unilaterally take away your Constitutional power provided to your State or your People. If nothing is done now, what will the future hold for you and your constituents?
