Change Massapequa High School's Mascot
Change Massapequa High School's Mascot
Why this petition matters
Massapequa High School's mascot is a Native American person wearing a head dress. Massapequa is also a majority white district. The mascot has prompted students to do 'red face'. Red face is when a non-Native person wears or appropriates Native clothing such as head dresses or symbols. Some students have gone as far to paint their faces red or brown at football games or homecoming. Long Island has a long history of Native American oppression and appropriation. Many other high schools on Long Island have similar mascots. Native American people are not mascots. They are not costumes. They are people that deserve respect. They are a people that have suffered genocide at the hands of white supremacy throughout American history. Change the mascot to something else. Take a vote on what students would rather have their mascot as but at the end of the day the 'Massapequa Chiefs' should not be the mascot for MHS.
