Now more than ever, kids are entering the school/foster care to prison pipeline. My nephew Ricky Ramon is one of those kids and is nearing adulthood. However, Ricky's harsh reality, along with many other children in the juvenile justice system, is that Ricky is the victim of much abuse and neglect. Now he is being re-traumatized over and over again by the state of MI while inside Bay Pines Center in Escanaba, MI.

Simply by being in "Bay Pines", while Ricky's Grandfather was dying of cancer is abusive enough. His Grandfather was the only real parent he had and now that he is dead, the state is exercising too much power over the life of my nephew, Ricky Ramon.

At the moment he is 16 but will be 17 this November 18, 2020 and I fear that people will continue to treat him as an adult criminal, rather than a child with special needs.

This is not fair because his life is at the hands of his case worker, Nicole Johnston at DHS whom condones Ricky being restrained as a way of dealing with what she basically calls behavioral problems.

Ricky does not have behavioral problems. Ricky Ramon suffers from mental illness and is not receiving appropriate treatment/care at Bay Pines.

A child with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), Bipolar Disorder, and ADHD, have needs. Being restrained is not one of them.

The worst part is that I do believe my nephew when he said that he was physically abused in Bay Pines and I would like this to be investigated immediately. I can't ask questions because nobody will allow me to speak to him.

I think any rational human being with compassion and empathy, and just plain common sense can see that Ricky is being physically, and emotionally abused in this facility, and I know he is confused and CANNOT receive the treatment that they are forcing upon him. He is my nephew, my family, and I love him. I moved back to Michigan to take care of him. He does not need to be in Bay Pines or any facility, because Ricky has me!

With that said I hope that each of you will join me in solidarity; while in pursuit of justice for my nephew, Ricky Ramon.

Thank You in advance!

Sincerely,

Rebecca Ramon
