As Indian Point shuts down its nuclear reactors and leaves the area, the local taxing jurisdictions face extreme economic hardship, employees risk losing their jobs, and local communities become uncompensated de-facto storage facilities for spent nuclear waste!

The Village of Buchanan will lose half of its tax revenue, approximately $3 million;
The Hendrick Hudson School District will lose approximately $24 million; and
The Town of Cortlandt will lose $800,000.00.

S.8075; A10398: This legislation will allow spent fuel storage units, including dry storage casks and spent fuel pools, throughout New York State to be classified as real property so that they can be taxed by the local communities. This would bring back tax revenue to these communities who are forced to store nuclear waste indefinitely without compensation.

S7846; A10338: This legislation seeks to limit the damage caused by the imminent closure of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant with respect to transferring the plant, decommissioning and by ensuring that the employees of Indian Point maintain their positions for as long as is feasible, with their prevailing wage still in effect. Corporations, firms, companies, partnerships, LLCs, and associations with contracts to purchase Indian Point will be expected to maintain the current workforce to the extent practical, and new hires will be selected from a list of qualified employees of the power plant. This legislation not only protects jobs but protects the safety and security of Indian Point throughout its closure.

S8204; A10107: This bill includes facilities that formerly generated nuclear power to the definition of nuclear powered electric generating facility. This change needs to be made to allow communities to continue to enter into Payment in Lieu of Tax (PILOT) Agreements even after the nuclear facilities shut down.
