Why this petition matters

Started by Kim Hopper

Parents have been requesting a review of the school zones for years without success.

Alice Springs priority school enrolment zones are INEQUITABLE and UNFAIR.

From their very first day of school every single child should have equitable access to a quality education and public schools should be representative of the full cross-section of the community. School zoning should enhance the equity of the system not disadvantage children and families and create segregation.

Data from the My Schools website shows the Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage ICSEA (a scale that identifies the socio-educational advantage of a school) as ranging from very high to extremely low across primary schools in Alice Springs. The higher the ICSEA value the higher the socio-educational advantage.

This petition requests that:

1. The priority school enrolment zones in Alice Springs be REDESIGNED so that there is fair representation of the community across all schools.

2. The policy for priority school enrolment zone boundaries be UPDATED with a focus on equity and reducing disparity in ICSEA rankings between primary schools.

3. That the decision making process around priority school enrolment zone boundaries be TRANSPARENT and made public.
