Re: 78th Birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi on the 19th June 2023

Aung San Suu Kyi, who has sacrificed over 35 years of her life for the freedom and democracy in Burma(Myanmar), is back in detention again since 1st February this year. Since 1988, when she started her political life, this is the fourth round of unlawful detention committed by the same military junta whom she tried to negotiate with for the better future of her country by peaceful reconciliation.

However, the military junta has no capability to understand the language of peaceful negotiation, the language of civilised society. They tried to rule the country by imposing fear in the society, by brutal killings and torture. The people of Myanmar have been very brave to stand against brutal military for more than 2 years and 4 months now, proving the military that they cannot rule the country by fear.

With increasing tension between the junta and the civilians , concerns of full blown civil war and humanitarian crisis have become real and imminent. Meanwhile, Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained in unknown place and no one knows her whereabouts and how about. There was a glimpse of her appearance on junta’s communication channels recently when she was trialled with unrealistic accusations in a court.

Although the junta intended to demoralise the people by showing her in detention state, people of Myanmar remained fully supportive and determined to stand with her in solidarity. She is the only person who can lead the country and avoid civil war.

We urge you to give more pressure to the Myanmar military to step down and allow Aung San Suu Kyi to run the country with her colleagues who has formed National Unity Government of Myanmar with full support from the people of Myanmar.
