Why this petition matters

Started by Abigail Silva

The City Council, in a unanimous vote, approved the street named “Rebel Road” be changed to “Fajita Drive” via an agenda item that would have never passed if Kyle residents had known that this would be the new name of this street. It subjects the city to jokes and humiliation and does nothing to contribute or better our diverse and growing community.

The City of Kyle has recently renamed Rebel  Road to “Fajita Drive” at an attempt to erase the racial ties associated with the former street name. The City of Kyle chose this name as City officials say it’s “significant to local culture and better suited to reflect the diversity of the city.”

As a lifetime City of Kyle resident, I am appalled that this was the choice that was best thought by the city as  a reflection of our local culture and diversity. The name Fajita Dr. was chosen after a man who is credited with the name “The Fajita King” after popularizing the fajita by introducing it in Kyle in the late 1960’s.

This does not honor our culture or community. As a Kyle citizen and Hispanic woman, I do not take my pride in my community and culture solely through enchiladas, tacos, and especially, fajitas.  I do not think the renaming of Rebel Road, known for its connection to racial inequality, to Fajita Road is serving any meaningful purpose. To a name street after a piece of meat, in hopes of honoring its diversity, in fact, ignores many wonderful aspects, history, leaders, and culture of our community.

This petition is to be sent to the City Council in hopes of renaming this heavily trafficked road to something that better reflects of our community. Make your voice heard!
