City of Timmins Animal Control Contract

Say no to for-profit
Put animal care first.

Currently, the City of Timmins has taken steps that will allow a for-profit organization to run our city’s animal control.

What would that mean?

Well, consider our elderly in our seniors homes and recent headlines. Most recently reported: “Ontario’s for-profit nursing homes - which have significantly higher rates of Covid-19 deaths – have 17% fewer workers, new Star analysis reveals.”

The Timmins and District Humane Society (TDHS) is a registered charity and does not operate to profit from the services it provides. The TDHS has been providing animal control services for the City of Timmins for 15 years in conjunction with its own important mission and programs as a humane society.

The next time you find a stray animal, who do you want to bring them to? The TDHS, or an organization that is looking to profit? Before you answer that, even though it’s an easy answer, consider the following:

  • In the past 15 years, the TDHS has seen a 74% reduction in euthanasia rates. This positive trend is attributed to knowledge and experience in the animal welfare sector as well as the refinement of various programs (i.e. the adoption program, transfer program, humane education and various partnerships.) This is a win/win/win/win for TDHS, the City, animal lovers, and most of all, the animals.
  • Spaying and neutering and lifesaving veterinary care is not included in the animal control contract, but they ARE a part of all the important wok staff, donors and volunteers are doing under the charity organization.
  • Only 21% of stray animals have ever been claimed by owners. In this regard, the humane society utilizes its own resources as a charity to rehome as many of the unclaimed animals as possible. (This doesn’t even account for the number of animals surrendered by their owners.) The humane society has an intricate and efficient network in place, which includes a medical team and volunteer veterinarian; partnering shelters and rescue organizations; volunteer transfer drivers and foster homes; as well as both business and personal supporters.

How a community treats its animals says a lot about that community. Let the Timmins & District Humane Society continue to make Timmins proud with the care we as a city provide to our pets!
