Why this petition matters

Started by Take Off

It has recently been announced that the community base for secondary mental health care in Canterbury, Laurel House, is to be closed. This is a big worry to many who rely on this building for a huge range of treatments for various mental disorders. The Community Mental Health Team is a mix of psychiatrists, mental health nurses and occupational therapists. It is important for those who need to access these services that they are in a central location for easy access. A large number of patients have received a service from this building over many years. There has been no consultation about this decision by the Kent and Medway Partnership Trust (KMPT).

At Take Off, a mental health charity based in Canterbury, we hear the voices of those affected first hand. It is causing a lot of distress to those struggling against the difficulties caused by mental ill-health. This is a further erosion of the provision in Canterbury following the recent announcement that a large part of the St Martins Hospital site is to be closed.

The most distress expressed is regarding the fact that KMPT plan to relocate this service to the St Martins Hospital site. Many of the people currently using Laurel House have been detained securely, by section or voluntarily, in the hospital during their most mentally unwell periods. Having left this facility to receive community care they do not want to return, on a regular basis, to a place which reminds them of these traumatic times. Some have described being 'terrified' of doing so and of the delay or prevention this will cause their ongoing recovery.

Please sign this petition to ensure the service user voice is heard.
