As members of the world’s cinema community, we denounce the Israeli Court’s decision to ban the screening and distribution  of the documentary film “Jenin, Jenin”, and express our solidarity with its maker, our colleague, the prominent Palestinian director and actor Mohammed Bakri. In defense of the freedom of expression, we ask you to join our call to lift this unconscionable ban. 

It is with consternation and outrage that we learned about the Israeli Lod District Court decision to ban the screening and distribution  of the 2002 documentary film “Jenin, Jenin” by the renown Palestinian filmmaker and actor Mohammed Bakri.

In its shocking decision the court alleged that some of the representations in the film – which describe events in the Jenin Palestinian refugee camp over a two week period in April 2002 – are untrue. In addition to prohibiting all screenings of the film in Israel, the court issued an order to confiscate 24 copies of the film and ordered the film’s director to pay NIS 175,000 ($55,000) in damages to an Israeli army officer who appears in the film, as well as NIS 50,000 ($15,500) in legal expenses.

Mohammed Bakri, who has been relentlessly harassed and persecuted by the Israeli government for the last 17 years, documents with no commentary or voice-over, the aftermath of the brutal destruction of the Jenin refugee camp committed by the Israeli army in 2002. He dedicates the film to its producer Iyad Samoudi who was killed by the Israeli troops in the Jenin Governorate shortly after filming was completed. 

We call upon the world community, and in particular our global cinema family, to join us in  denouncing this flagrant attempt at censorship. The Israeli authorities responsible, including the Minister of Culture, must be held to account.

Subjectivity is an essential aspect of artistic and cinematic expression. We therefore call upon our colleagues and comrades to join us in the denunciation of the allegations against Bakri and the attempts by the Israeli authorities to imperil freedom of speech and artistic freedom of Palestinian filmmakers and artists. 

Finally, we demand the full revocation of the Israeli court’s unacceptable decision which threatens the fundamental rights of filmmakers and artists to freely express their point of view.

كأعضاء في مجتمع صناع السينما حول العالم، نعرب عن غضبنا و رفضنا لقرار المحكمة الإسرائيلية بحظر عرض الفيلم الوثائقي "جنين، جنين”  أو توزيعه، ونعرب عن تضامننا مع صانعه، زميلنا المخرج  الفلسطيني  والممثل محمد بكري،  و دفاعا عن حرية التعبير، ندعوكم للانضمام معنا من اجل رفع هذا الحظر الغير معقول  

لقد تابعنا  لمدة سنوات عديدة بقلق كبير مجريات محاكمة فيلم ، وهذا بحد ذاته كان صدمة كبيرة لنا كمجتمع سينمائي ، وشعرنا بالغضب  بالقرار والحكم  الصادر من المحكمة “الإسرائيلية”، حظر عرض أو توزيع الفيلم الوثائقي "جنين، جنين" الذي أخرجه  محمد بكري مستندة في قرارها الغير عادل على أن بعض المشاهد  في الفيلم - التي تصف الأحداث التي وقعت في مخيم جنين للاجئين الفلسطينيين في نيسان/أبريل 2002 ـ بالكاذبة

وبالإضافة إلى حظر عرض الفيلم  في إسرائيل، أصدرت المحكمة أمرا بمصادرة 24 نسخة من الفيلم وأمرت بأن يدفع مخرج الفيلم  مبلغ 000 175 شيكل  إسرائيلي (000 55 دولار) ضررا لضابط احتياطي في الجيش الإسرائيلي يظهر في الفيلم، حسب تعبيرهم ، فضلا عن  دفع 000 50 شيكل  إسرائيلي (500 15 دولار) تذهب الى  مصروفات المحكمة

لقد تعرض محمد بكري مخرج الفيلم الى مضايقات واضطهاد بلا هوادة من جانب الحكومة الإسرائيلية على مدى السنوات السبع عشرة الماضية، كل ذلك بسبب إخراجه فيلما وثائقيا، يحكي الحقيقة.

لذا ندعو كل من ينتمي  للسينما وحريتها  في جميع أنحاء العالم إلى رفع أصواتهم للتنديد بخطورة الرقابة التي تؤيدها السلطات الإسرائيلية ووزير الثقافة هناك،  والتي ينتج عنها تقييد حرية التعبير، والهجوم على حرية الإبداع الفني، ونذكّر بأن الموضوعية في تصدير وجهات نظرنا كفنانين، هي  في صميم حريتنا الفنية والسينمائية، 

لذلك ندعو، ليس فقط السينمائيين حول  العالم، بل كل العالم ، للانضمام إلينا في إدانة الادعاءات الموجهة ضد بكري، ومحاولات السلطات الإسرائيلية تعريض حرية التعبير والحرية الفنية لمنتجي الأفلام والفنانين الفلسطينيين للخطر.

وأخيرا، نطالب بشدة بإلغاء قرار المحكمة الإسرائيلية غير المقبول الذي يهدد الحقوق الأساسية لصانعي الأفلام والفنانين في التعبير عن وجهة نظرهم بحرية.
