Why this petition matters

Trade union campaign on behalf of workers employed by Glasgow Life, an arm’s length company of Glasgow City Council. Glasgow Life run the city’s sports centres, museums, libraries, community facilities and cultural services.

UNISON, GMB and UNITE are working together on the campaign which calls for workers employed by Glasgow Life to be treated the same as council workers in terms of public holiday payments, overtime rates, grievances and disciplinary procedures.  The trade unions say that the 2,500 Glasgow Life workers are the “odd ones out” when compared with the 25,000 workers who work for Glasgow City Council and its ALEOs.

In addition, the trade unions call for proper staffing levels and permanent employment contracts and say that Glasgow Life deliberately “under-employ” many workers in the name of flexibility.

They also call on the council leadership to halt the privatisation of the catering service at the new Burrell Museum. The trade unions say that this breaches a 2017 manifesto commitment not to privatise services made by the current Council Administration.

Finally, the trade unions state that the Glasgow Life Board is unaccountable pointing to the fact that there are more unelected appointees than Glasgow City Councillors.

The winding up of Glasgow Life as an ALEO and returning the workers and services to full council control would address many of these matters.
