Why this petition matters

Started by Jason Headley

When you look at police today, you can’t help but to notice a certain logo and/or flag showing up more and more. This generally shows up as either a simple blue line (with any single colored background) or, more notably, on an altered US flag. This logo/flag is known as the “Thin Blue Line” (TBL). Most of the time, it’s either on but not limited to their uniform(s), their person, their vehicle(s), and even on police building(s). Few believed that the TBL is known to symbolize a sense of comradery and/or unity amongst those that serve in law enforcement. Not only is this very divisive in nature, but many believe it serves as a major disconnect due to me “Us vs. Them” mentality exhibited by law enforcement officers/officials (i.e., the crime committing public against the law abiding enforcers).

‘We the People’ would like to remind both the federal and local government that we own these buildings, cars and we pay the salaries of these public servants. ‘We the People’ wish to stand by the only flag that represents us all, in unity, the American flag. When looking at this TBL flag (altered US flag) many see it for what it is, a violation of the US flag code. (See Title 36 Chapter 10 §176. Respect for flag)

-No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.

(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

This Thin Blue Line (TBL) disfigurement of our beautiful flag is a distasteful violation of the law(s) of our land and a presentation of disrespect towards our US flag. A violation boldly and proudly being carried out, in your face and in public view nationwide (on a daily basis) by our law enforcement officers/officials.

Altering our flag, changing its colors, and/or adding a mark (TBL insignia) in order to change its meaning (while claiming it as their own) is dishonorable, truly unpatriotic as well as un-American. ‘We the People’ refuse to be conditioned to accept this.

While many police departments have placed this altered US flag up in their office(s) and on their police vehicles, some have even gone so far as to fly this “flag” either inside or outside our police buildings. With time, some officers are taking it upon themselves to place it either somewhere on their uniform(s) or on their person (such as wearing TBL rings. Nationwide, police departments have established uniform policies. These policies give guidance and outline exactly what can and cannot be worn while either in uniform or on the uniform itself. Simply put, law enforcement are deciding to do as they please by ignoring theseuniform policies. To brandish a mark, insignia, or design that advertises an external membership club violates these uniform policies.

Advertising the TBL on wrist bands, pins, patches, rings, stickers, etc. while in uniform showcases this violation. And the TBL between two black strips is seen as the abbreviated version of the altered US flag.

Whether the TBL and Blue Lives Matter are associated with each other or not, this does not change the fact that people see them as one in the same. Interpretation is in the eye of the beholder, and the TBL is interpreted several different ways. While some see the TBL as a symbol of police support, or a symbol showing the separation of order and chaos, or even as dedication to fallen police officers, but ‘We the People’ do not. Citizen’s that observe officer’s brandishing the TBL flag see an officer acknowledging/agreeing that he/she will support another police officer before a citizen, also known as “Backing the Blue”. Some see an officer making a political statement, much like the San Antonio police officers who were disciplined for wearing “Make America Great Again” while in uniform. While some see the altered US flag as an image declaring the “United Police State of America”, many of us see the TBL as nothing more than what it is, a gang sign.

Due to the fact that the TBL is interpreted in several different ways (mostly negative) the Thin Blue Line (in any/all form(s))must be banned (made illegal to possess, much like an illegal drug) from police uniforms, police vehicles, police building and/or any government building funded partially or in whole by tax payer funding (taxes). The mere sight of the TBL flag has caused unnecessary animosity during many police/citizen’sinteractions and still will continue to be, until banned. By signing this petition, we hope and pray a federal ban is forthcoming, to rid our great country of this indecent “flag”(and/or logo/symbol) that symbolizes the tyrannical behavior of some law enforcement officers and/or government officials.

‘We the People’ by signing this petition, ask that the U.S. Federal Government (by way of current President) implement a nationwide ban on the use and/or possession on such flag.

‘We the People’ want to get back to using our flag, the great American flag, the one that represents us all, as one. The “Thin Blue Line Flag Ban Act” was written by Jason Headley of Ocala, Florida.

Thank you for signing our petition.
