Stop ULEZ being imposed retrospectively
Stop ULEZ being imposed retrospectively
Why this petition matters
Everyone wants cleaner air. Luckily new technologies such as electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells, particulate removers are being rolled out and improved all the time. However these new technologies are EXPENSIVE.
The Mayor of London has decided to expand the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) This means poorer owners /users are effectively being FINED for not being able to afford a compliant vehicle.
From October 2021 everyone within the North & South Circular roads will have to pay £12.50 a day to use their vehicle. Waltham Forest has asked that ULEZ apply to the whole borough.
All these people bought their vehicles in good faith. Making them pay retrospectively is against all the principles of British democracy and justice. It is like making leaseholders pay for new cladding post Grenfell; they did not manufacture or install the cladding. Similarly motorists did not design polluting vehicles.
This fine will impact most severely on the poorest in our society. People with small businesses. People caring for relatives. Older people.
It's reasonable to impose charges on vehicles bought AFTER October 2021 but not on those already bought in good faith.
ULEZ is an unfair tax. We demand this Labour Mayor rescinds this penalty which widens inequalities in London.
