Why this petition matters

Started by Emory Community

Earlier this week, Emory students woke up to find mock “eviction notices” posted on their doors. The inciting fliers, which were found at both on-campus and off-campus housing units, informed students that their dorms or apartments were “scheduled for demolition in three days.”

The notices were posted by a group called Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) in an apparent effort to protest Israel. They appeared to target Jewish students in particular, who often hang mezuzahs (small prayer scrolls) on their doorposts.

Targeting students on the basis of their religion is never okay. Doing so in what are supposed to be safe spaces – on the doors of students’ homes – is even worse.

College campuses are supposed to foster free-ranging discourse and promote the exchange of ideas. But once free speech crosses the line and turns into threats and intimidation, the university has an obligation to prioritize the safety of its students.

SJP’s actions are a clear violation of Emory University’s Open Expression policy (8.14.5.6 Supporting Expression, Protest, and Dissent through University Space). Nevertheless, the university’s response has been insufficient.

Sign this petition to tell Emory University President Claire Sterk to stand up for all students and condemn SJP’s bullying of Jewish students.
