Why this petition matters

Started by Chief Jacko

Dominicans at home and abroad fear that the upcoming Dec 6th elections could be tampered with.

The solution is clear to us: make presenting identification documents mandatory at the Dec 6th election (detailed proposal below).

We all want to trust the process, but it is difficult to do that in the current environment. One side argues that non-residents and other ineligible voters are going to vote, possibly even under the names of dead people. The other side argues that things are as clean as they have always been and that the opposition has obstructed the reform process. We, the people, hear you both. We don't know who to trust, but we know that there are 74000 voters on the list, whilst we have a local population of 60000.

We are all worried. DLP supporters are worried that there may not be peace after the elections; if Labour wins but the opposition rejects the result. UWP supporters fear that voting under dead names, double voting or shifting voters to other constituencies might lead to a false result.

We want reform because we want peace. We have already seen unrest over this. We don't care how you do it, but we demand that you do it.

Our first proposal for Dec 6th:

1. Representatives from both parties, jointly check every single person entering the voting booth

2. They verify that they are registered to vote in their present location, by checking their IDs against the list

3. Passports, driver's licenses, birth papers and social security cards are used to verify each and every person's identity

4. When someone does not have any of the above, they need at least one person (with the above) to vouch for them

Our proposal is a short-term alternative to those suggested in the joint caricom-commonwealth-oas-special mission to Dominica. There will be more civic action if there is no progress on this after the election.

Our proposal only requires 42 political reps and 21 spreadsheets so we are sure securing the upcoming election is possible - if the political will to do it exists.

In case that will does not exist, we hope the number of signatories on this petition creates that political will among all our politicians. We will directly contact both the DLP and UWP. Email them yourself at:

UWP: uwp@uwpdominica.com

DLP: gensecdominicalabourparty@gmail.com

Finally, this is a people's solution so contribute here to suggest improvements. Contribute whole proposals or minor changes. We will add different versions based on the comments you add.

  - Yours Sincerely, Chief Jacko
