Stop China’s cultural hegemony!
China, which distorted Korean Hanbok and Arirang as Chinese culture, is now distorting Korean traditional food, Kimchi as Chinese food.
On November 29, 2020, China’s state-run media, Global Times(环球时报), took a post from a site called Fengwen(hearsay) Community(风闻社区), a platform operated by Chinese media, Guancha Syndicate(观察者网), and posted on Global Times Baidu account.
In an article posted on the Baidu account by Global Times, Pao Cai(泡菜), a pickled vegetable in China was set as an international standard by the ISO(International Organization for Standardization) that “Korean Kimchi is also Pao Cai, so now China is the world standard for Kimchi industry.”
The Global Times spread the distorted text even though the ISO clearly stated that “This (ISO) document does not apply to Kimchi.”
ISO’s new accreditation as an international standard is a pickle-like salted vegetable from Sichuan Province, China, which is different from traditional Korean Kimchi.
Chinese Pao Cai and Korean Kimchi are completely different foods because there are major differences in shape, manufacturing process, and fermentation stage. Above all, the international standard that China advocates is meaningless with the exclusion of Korea, the birthplace of Kimchi.
For this reason, on November 30th, the BBC stipulated that reports of the Chinese media’s “international Kimchi Standard” was misleading.
In an article entitled “Kimchi ferments cultural feud between South Korea and China”, the BBC reported that “South Korea has rebuffed China after ‘false reports’ that it had won global certification for its production of Kimchi – a hallowed dish for Koreans”
The BBC also introduced the ingredients of Kimchi and Kimjang culture of Korea, explaining that it is different from China’s Pao Cai.
However, it is not only the Chinese state-run media that distorts Kimchi.
In the encyclopedia of Baidu, China’s largest portal site, there is a distorted description of Kimchi that it is a long cultural heritage of China and the origin of Kimchi is China.
Media and portal site with great influence in China distorting as ‘the origin of Kimchi is China’ and ‘Kimchi is a Chinese cultural heritage’, and leaving it uncorrected, can be seen as an expression of China’s willingness to promote Kimchi as a Chinese culture.
VANK speculates that the distortion of Kimchi in China’s Global Times and Baidu Encyclopedia is the so called ‘Kimchi Project’ to transform Korean food culture into Chinese culture, like the Northeast Project promoted by the Chinese government to distort Korean Goguryeo into Chinese history.
For Koreans, Kimchi is a long-standing cultural heritage of Korea and a symbol of food culture that reveals Koreans’ identity to the international community
In this sense, China’s so-called ‘Kimchi Project’ to take Kimchi into Chinese culture reveals China’s nationalism and cultural hegemony. If this is left unattended, it will lead to great divisions and conflicts between the citizens of both Korea and China.
Therefore, if the international community remains idle on China’s cultural hegemony, it will be a great threat to peace in Northeast Asia, and world peace in the future will be shadowed by dark clouds.
Accordingly, we request the rectification of incorrect reports and information on Kimchi in Chinese state-run media, Global Times, and in China’s representative portal site, Baidu.
First, Global Times should apologize for spreading misinformation about Kimchi.
Second, Baidu should correct misinformation about Kimchi in its encyclopedia.

2020년 11월 29일 중국의 관영 매체인 환구시보는 중국 매체 관찰자망(观察者网)이 운영하는 플랫폼인 풍문커뮤니티(风闻社区)라는 곳에 올라온 글을 가져와 환구시보 바이두 계정에 글을 올렸습니다.
환구시보가 바이두 계정에 올린 글에는 “중국의 절임채소인 파오차이(泡菜)를 국제표준화기구(ISO)가 국제표준으로 정하면서 '한국 김치도 파오차이에 해당하므로 이젠 중국이 김치산업의 세계 표준'”이라고 되어 있습니다.
환구시보는 ISO가 “해당 식품 규격은 ‘김치’에 적용되지 않는다”고 분명하게 밝혔는데도 왜곡된 글을 전파했습니다.
ISO가 국제 표준으로 인가한 것은 피클에 가까운 중국 쓰촨성의 염장 채소로, 이는 한국 전통의 김치와는 다릅니다.
중국의 파오차이와 한국의 김치는 모양, 제조 공정, 발효단계에 있어서 큰 차이점이 존재하기 때문에 전혀 다른 식품입니다. 무엇보다 김치 종주국인 한국이 배제된 상태에서 중국이 주장하는 국제적 표준은 큰 의미가 없습니다.
이런 이유로 11월 30일 영국 공영 BBC 방송은 중국 언론의 '김치 국제 표준' 관련 보도는 오보라고 규정했습니다.
BBC 방송은 '김치, 한중 문화 갈등을 발효하다' 제하 기사를 통해 "중국이 한국 전통 음식인 김치의 제조법을 국제적으로 인정받았다는 '오보'(false report)에 한국이 퇴짜를 놨다"고 보도했습니다.
또한 BBC는 한국 김치의 재료와 김장문화를 소개하면서 중국의 파오차이와는 다르다고도 설명했습니다.
그런데 중국 관변 언론사만 김치를 왜곡하는 것이 아닙니다.
중국 최대 포털사이트 바이두 백과사전에는 '김치는 중국의 유구한 문화유산이며 김치의 기원은 중국'이라는 왜곡된 내용이 서술되어 있습니다.
중국에서 영향력이 큰 언론사와 포털사이트가 김치가 중국의 문화유산이며 김치의 기원이 중국이라 왜곡하고, 또 이를 시정하지 않고 방치하는 것은 중국이 김치를 중국의 문화로 홍보하겠다는 의지의 표현이라 볼 수 있습니다.
반크는 중국의 대표 포털사이트인 바이두 백과사전과 중국 유명 언론사인 환구시보의 김치 왜곡은 한국의 고구려를 중국의 역사로 왜곡하기 위해 중국정부가 추진한 동북공정처럼 한국의 음식 문화를 중국의 문화로 만들기 위한 이른바 '김치공정'이라 추측합니다.
한국인들에게 김치는 유구한 한국의 문화유산이자, 국제사회에 한국인의 정체성을 드러내는 음식문화의 상징입니다.

이에 우리는 중국의 관영 매체인 환구시보와 중국 대표 포털사이트인 바이두를 대상으로 김치에 대한 잘못된 보도와 정보에 대한 시정을 요구합니다.
하나, 환구시보는 김치에 대한 잘못된 정보를 확산한 것에 대해 사과하라.
하나, 바이두는 백과사전에 김치에 대한 잘못된 정보를 시정하라.
