The purpose of this petition is to demand a halt to the continued investigation and targeting of individuals by Mayor Webber, the District Attorney’s Office, Santa Fe Police Department, Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office and New Mexico State Police, with regards to the removal of the Santa Fe obelisk. The actions of these entities have emboldened harassment from alt-right vigilantes and hostile community members invested in symbols of institutionalized racism and patriarchal dominance. To date physical addresses, professional histories and personal information have been made publicly available in an attempt to put INDIGENOUS women and allies in the direct line of harm for their alleged participation in the obelisk removal or support thereof. The solidarity action around the Santa Fe obelisk is significant as part of a global movement to remove statues and monuments that perpetuate colonial dominance and erasure of Indigenous people.

The actions by Mayor Webber, the District Attorney’s Office, Santa Fe Police Department, Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office and New Mexico State Police, violate the premise of due process and put community members' lives and families in the path of potential violent and biased retaliation. Painting this incident as an act of violence and directly demonizing individuals who are allegedly involved by posting their images on social media, assuages the responsibility of governing bodies like Mayor Webber for their inaction in delivering on promises made to the community in public statements as well as to local and national media. It also fails to see the national and global solidarity and support for the removal of monuments that represent legacies of racism. This community-based removal is not erasing history but finding more accurate and complex ways of telling history outside of the paternalistic and colonial narrative.

We call for all charges to be dropped for the five individuals facing criminal felony and misdemeanor charges and the halting of any ongoing investigations with regards to the removal of the obelisk.

The actions by Mayor Webber, the District Attorney’s Office, Santa Fe Police Department ,Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office and New Mexico State Police, have put community members, their friends and their families at risk instead of using community resources to take actionable steps to follow through on prior promises and address a more accurate and full telling of the history of the obelisk and its subsequent removal.
