Why this petition matters

Started by I HEART CRAGGY

Help us save one of the country's wildest and most spectacular old-growth forests. We are a small group of rural neighbors who accidentally ignited a national movement to create the Craggy Wilderness and National Scenic Area. It will permanently protect 18,000 acres of primeval forests, headwaters, trails, and panoramic vistas in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina.

Part of Pisgah National Forest, Craggy safeguards dozens of rare and endangered species. It is one of the most biologically diverse forests in the country. Hollywood blockbusters have been filmed in Craggy’s enchanted forests, including The Hunger Games and The Last of the Mohicans. Waterfalls thunder down its rugged slopes.

Unfortunately, logging threatens this primordial forest. So a handful of local farmers, teachers, and neighbors gathered around a wobbly table in the community center and committed to protecting Craggy. We've quickly grown into a national coalition that includes hundreds of organizations and businesses—and thousands of supporters.

We've rallied overwhelming public, scientific, and political support for the Craggy Wilderness and National Scenic Area. The Forest Service has received thousands of comments supporting permanent protections for Craggy. Young leaders have organized rallies, speaking with quivering voices to protect the forest. City council and county commissioners have passed unanimous bipartisan resolutions supporting an expanded Craggy Wilderness and stronger protections for all of Craggy.

Now, our coalition is working with Congress to introduce the Craggy Mountain Wilderness and National Scenic Area Act. It will permanently protect the old-growth forests, world-class trails, pristine watersheds, and scenic vistas.

This is Craggy’s big moment. This is a rare and unique opportunity to permanently protect one of the country's premier old-growth forests. Together, we can forever safeguard this ancient forest for our future.
